"Margot's excellent instruction
has allowed me to take my riding to new heights (literally!) She has
always been very supportive and helpful in resolving problems between
horse and rider"
Margot’s experience is with beginner and intermediate riders
of all ages and with adults who want to “get back
into” riding after a hiatus either from an injury
or life obligations.
While mainly event oriented, Margot’s
primary goal for her students is to learn strong basic riding
skills—a good seat, soft hands and eyes, and confidence.
Students are not ring-bound for long—exposure to the fields
and the trails is essential to learning how to deal with variations in
footing and “the elements”. Beginners are most
often led either on foot or ponied.
Margot has worked extensively with more advanced riders, using her own experience from years of demanding training. She has a strong penchant for ground work, gymnastics, and cross country. She helped numerious riders bridge gaps between their flat work and jumping. Margot's former and current students are excelling in upper level jumpers and many in the low to mid levels of eventing.
"Margot provides a supporting and fun atmosphere for both horse and rider. She encorporates exercises into her lessons that help a horse and rider pair to advance and excel in their abilities as a team, while making it fun at the same time."
- Maria, 16 yrs.
In addition, basic horsemanship is taught as part of each
lesson. Students are eventually expected to tack their own horse up;
cool it down and care for its general well-being.
More advanced riders will be exposed to training and first level
dressage. For those who jump, Margot has a strong penchant for
gymnastics and cross country.
Having started riding at five years old with the venerable Maryland horsewoman Louise Hollyday, Margot receives regular expert instruction from Grand Prix dressage rider Dona Ruth, owner of the legendary Ships Quarters and all-star eventer Sarah (Sally) Cousins as well as clinicians such as Heath Ryan, Jim Wofford, and Phillip Dutton. She regularly competes in horse trials, jumper and dressage shows, and volunteers with MDA, MCTA, USEA Instructor's Certification Program and other area horse events. Margot is approved by the State of Maryland Child Protective Service Division and is trained in CPR.
"Since bringing my young horse to Liberty View Farm,
we have made the kind of progress in a year that it takes most horses
and riders several years to accomplish. " By taking lessons with Margot
and utilizing clinics that have been organized at LVF, my horse and I
have progressed from barely managing a balanced canter to receiving
ribbons in all of the horse trials, jumper shows and hunter shows in
which we have entered". JENNIFER, owner of Sturgis
